Yvonne Joyce Craig
Yvonne Joyce Craig (May 16 1937 - August 17 in 2015) was an American actress and ballet dancer best known for her role as Batgirl in the 1960s' tv series Batman as well as her role as the green-skinned Orion slave girl Marta in the Star Trek episode "Whom Gods Destroy" (1969). The Huffington Post referred to her as "a pioneer in female superheroes" on television. Yvonne Craig was born in Taylorville, Illinois, and was raised in Columbus, Ohio. Her family moved to Dallas in 1951. She attended W. H. Adamson High School, Sunset High School as well as W. H. Adamson High School. The only problem was that she was not able to graduate as she was not awarded "one PE credit". Craig was accepted into Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo as the most junior ballerina in the company after being recognized by Alexandra Danilova who is a dancer and teacher. This experience was beneficial when she did stunts playing Batgirl. In 1957, she resigned from the ballet company because of an issue over casting changes. She later moved to Los Angeles with the hope to continue her career in dance. However, she soon found herself in film roles. Her first television roles was on the TV series Perry Mason ("The Case of the Lazy Lover") in 1958 , alongside Neil Hamilton. Hamilton later played Batgirl's stepfather, Police Commissioner James Gordon. Then, she appeared in three films--The Young Land, The Gene Krupa Story The Gene Krupa Story, and Gidget (all 1959)--and also guest-starred in the TV series Mr. Lucky as Beverly Mills in the episode "Little Miss Wow" (also 1959). Craig was seen in the films Bing Crosby and Seven Women from Hell (1960), in which she was cast alongside Cesar Romero. In 1962, she appeared as guest on Western Laramie's show "The Long Road Back". Craig also starred with Elvis Presley's roles in It happened at the World's Fair (1963), and Kissin' Cousins (64). She also starred in the science-fiction film Mars Needs Women (1966) and also appeared in In Like Flint (1967) as a Russian ballet dancer opposite James Coburn.
